Challenging Sprint course distances are one half of the Olympic's = 750m, 20km, 5k.
----------------------------------------
1) SWIM 1.5km ( = 0.9 miles)..... one triangle leg out and back course in the fresh, clean and warm water of the Los Banos reservoir recreation area. Course will be marked with big Orange buoys. Expected Water temperature around 70 F. Wetsuits are recommended at your own risk.   Sprint only one short lap out and back ( 750 meters = 0.45 miles )
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) BIKE 40km ( = 24.8 miles)......one loop on agricultural FLAT, well paved roads, almost no traffic . Leaving the transition area, your first mile starts with A STEEP 800 yards down- to glide safely through a 6-8 inch deep water pit (dry in 2008) followed by 800 yards uphill climb  that ends with a left turn to Canyon Road for another mile of down-hill long grade viewing the big valley. After crossing I-5 overpass and the irrigation canal it is all a FLAT LOOP (clock-wise) around the green fields of the countryside. Continue on to end of Canyon road to turn right on Pioneer.  Crossing a STOP on Ortigalita, turn right on Center Ave, turn right on Almond Dr, after one mile turn right on Ortigalita, assisted by officer turn left on Sunset Ave, to the end and assisted left turn on Canyon Road back to the transition area crossing I-5 overpass.
At the top of the uphill-mile-grade turn right down hill and climb back up to transition area. Sprint only: mile 6-U-turn back at Canyon and Sunset  ( 20 km = 12.4 miles). About 5 miles flat, 2 down-,  2 up-grade and 3 miles up+down hill.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) NEW COURSE: RUN 10k ( 6.2 miles) 1 loop .....run from transition area up to the road and turn left on pavement to enter running trails on plateau overlooking reservoir, 0.6 miles. Run straight and follow the red arrows indicating turns.  Water stations will be posted along the running course every mile or less. After finishing the big loop run the inner loop one more time counter clockwise then head back over pavement down to transition area.  See and print running course map at http://www.ebiz.netopia.com/tri/scrapbook/
HAT strongly recommended. Four Water/Gatorade stations one mile apart.
Sprint: only run inner loop twice and back ( 5 km = 3.1 miles)

800 yards steep hill is very similar to that of Wildflower at mile 41, see pictures at http://ebiz.netopia.com/tri/newwindmansite/view_alone.nhtml?profile=newwindmansite&UID=10008 link. A 200 horse power car climbs up this hill at 7 mph and 1500 rpm in first gear. A cyclist should be prepared to climb this hill in the first gear of a 24 (3x8 sprockets) gear bike  at 5 to 6 mph and 80 cadence. Downhill speed limited to 15 mph.
